What is the Best Metal For Body Jewelry?

Two of the most common issues with body piercings are allergic reactions and infection. Correct care and cleaning of piercings are crucial, but the type of metal in the piercing jewelry you choose is also very important. The following are the top 3 best metals for body jewelry, and two choices that you should stay away from.

THE 3 BEST METALS FOR BODY JEWELRY:

#1 Implant Grade Titanium

Titanium is by far the metal of choice for body piercing jewelry, and can be safely used for initial piercings. Implant grade titanium G23 (Ti6al4v-ELI) is the type of titanium used in surgical implants, is biocompatible, resistant to body fluids and nickel free. Titanium is also stronger and lighter than steel, which gives us body piercing jewelry that is both durable, comfortable and nearly without scratches. Titanium is an expensive metal, but well worth the slightly higher price. Titanium body jewelry is beautiful, it lasts, and will look (just the same after many years of wear.

#2 Surgical Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is the most common metal for body piercing jewelry, and is just behind titanium when it comes to biocompatibility. 316L or 316LVM are the only two grades of stainless steel that are considered safe for wearing in healed piercings. Keep in mind that even the best grades of stainless steel do contain nickel and may cause problems for those who are allergic to nickel. Some countries have banned the use of stainless steel for initial piercings, and it is best to steer clear of stainless steel altogether until after your piercing is completely.

#3 Gold

Although it is beautiful, gold is not the best choice for body jewelry, especially for initial piercings or long term wear. Because gold is a softer metal and is made with metal alloys, there is a somewhat higher risk of irritation or infection. Gold jewelry is beautiful, but should only be worn in healed piercings, and with care. Replace gold body jewelry with titanium at the first sign of irritation.

NOT RECOMMENDED:

Sterling Silver: Do not purchase any body jewelry where the part that threads under your skin (barbell, banana, ring) is made of silver. Sterling silver tarnishes when it comes in contact with body fluids, can easily harbor bacterial growth, and can contain allergy-causing metals such as nickel. Body jewelry where a sterling silver "charm" that is attached to or dangles from the end of the steel or titanium bar is perfectly fine, so long as you aren't allergic to silver jewelry. Just make sure that the part that is inside your body is made from a more biocompatible metal.

Mystery Metal: Scary. Any "costume" or "plated" body jewelry is a bad idea, and so is poor quality stainless steel. Stick with the top 3 choices above to be sure your piercing stays irritation and infection-free.

Remember that a body piercing jewelry is placed inside you, and should be treated more like a surgical implant than a piece of costume jewelry. Although it may be tempting to buy cheaper body jewelry, spending a little more on higher quality jewelry is definitely a better way to go in the long run.

Tongue Piercing Considerations To Avoid Infections

There was a time when piercings were so uncommon that if you had one, you were one of few. This is not the case today. Many of us now have some king of piercing somewhere upon our bodies. In fact some tattoos and piercings are now so common that you are more individual if you don't have one. It's a good idea, generally speaking, to go for something different.
Tongue piercings are relatively commonplace these days but remain ever popular. The British Dental Association says that such tongue piercings can cause infections and even broken teeth.
So there is an associated risk of infection with a tongue piercing, more so than a normal piercing due to its close proximity to the airway. Any infection can result in swelling of the tongue as well.
To minimize the risk of any potential infection, it is generally advised that brushing is important so that the tongue does not become inflamed. Mouthwash is also useful in cleaning the parts of the mouth that brushing does not always effectively clean or even reach.
Sterilisation of piercing equipment is also vitally important when considering a tongue piercing. This process is done using an autoclave but not all piercers use it as it's relatively expensive to purchase. More reputable piercers should use such equipment so its worth checking that out also.
Reported problems after tongue piercings have been done, according to the EPPA, are relatively low, although I suspect many dentists would confirm problems with teeth due to the hard studs causing cracking and similar problems. Once you have had your tongue piercing done, it generally takes around three weeks for it to heal. This is considerably less time than a belly button piercing takes to heal. Body Piercing Or Body Perishing?

Probably, the trend of body piercing is as old as our organized human civilization itself. According to some history experts the prevalence of this trend can be dated back to three millenniums ago. In 1991, the discovery of an “iceman” mummy with his ears pierced, on the border of Italy can be a proof.

But according to the medical experts, despite its acceptance as a symbol of individual expression, its side effects can be millenniums old too. The careless and unadvised embracing of body piercing can be fatal and hazardous to the health of your skin, in some cases to your tissues too.

The pierced part of skin develops an irritating itching or scratches. In some cases infections and allergies too. It all happens when we put on low quality jewelry and don't allow to heal the pierced part. The reasons can be many and so many can be complications.

The simple itching may turn into swollen, bleeding and smelly boils only to scare you. So, before this symbol of individual expression turns into a symbol of “individual irritation”, we must be careful about certain aspects while getting our body parts pierced.

First of all, make sure that the piercing tools used by the professional is sterilized and bacteria free. Tell him to clean the ”part-to-be-pierced” with care, most necessarily with a medicated soap. If the cleaning of tools and the skin part is not done properly, it may harm the skin as well the tissues beneath.

Though the jewelry made of nickel and cobalt etc. are cheapest and look stunning, they are more likely to instigate threatening and skin damaging allergies, if put in the holes. It is best to use gold jewelry. Fashion jewelry made of stainless steel too can be free from any ailment. However, silver jewelry should be avoided when the skin has just got pierced.

In case you feel even a slight itching, irrespective of the jewelry type, please throw off the jewelry first. Then, consult a dermatologist or a skin specialist. Most probably, he may apply a cortisone cream over the infected area and leave it for healing.

When it gets healed, the jewelery, not a nickel one, may be used again. Hopefully, if you pay little attention in this regard, your piercing craze will not leave you to perish.

10 Essential Tips For Body Piercing

Body piercing is becoming increasingly popular with people of any gender or age. However, safety and hygiene should be your top concern before you get anywhere close to the needle – the following 10 tips for body piercing safety will ensure it doesn’t end up in infection.

1.) Use only professional masters.
Piercing should only be performed by a professional. Make sure you spend some time a reliable professional and seek a consultation before you make a decision to pierce. Home or amateur piercing jobs are very likely to lead to complications or infections.
2.) Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Treat your piercer the same as you would a doctor – ask about their hygiene and safety standards and disease prevention policies. A lot of diseases, including HIV and Hepatitis, can be transmitted through dirty needles – do not be afraid to ask the necessary questions, as your health is at stake and stay clear of any “professionals” unwilling to provide answers.

3.) Choose carefully.
Everybody’s different – and there are considerations when piercing the chosen spot. Going to a professional piercer ensures the experience can be successful. For instance, individuals with an “out” belly button can’t get their belly button pierced due to the orientation. Also, for example, tongue piercing can be complicated for some individuals due to the orientation of essential nerves and blood vessels.

4.) Think of the impact of your piercing.
Consider your future potential employers before making a piercing - most frown upon visible body piercings. Also keep in mind that regardless of your personal attitude to piercing, you may be discriminated against on this sole matter. Thus before you decide on any piercing, consider carefully the impact on your life and your image.

5.) Choose only high quality body jewellery.
When choosing body jewellery, make sure you choose only quality metals or high carbonate plastics that will not have any complications and will be well-tolerated. Body piercing jewellery should be either gold with a high karat count or surgical quality stainless steel. Avoid at all costs cheap or dodgy body jewellery – quality is a lot more important here than the design.

6.) Keep it clean.
After having body piercing done, it’s vital to ensure cleanliness - your body sees a piercing as a wound. Infections affect both piercing holes and puncture wounds which aren’t clean.

7.) Dry is the key.
Most professionals agree that piercing hole should be kept dry until fully healed. Keep it clean of salt or chlorine water, salvia or sweat – all of these can potentially lead to infection.

8.) Don’t use makeup.
When doing a facial piercing, avoid using makeup over the hole, as most cosmetic contain oils that can cause infection.

9.) Spot infection early.
Infections can cause pain and discomfort quite quickly - but warning signs include any discharge from the wound, fever, pain, discomfort, swelling, and redness around the hole.

10.) Do seek medical help.
If your piercing shows any signs of infection or complication, seek medical help immediately. Also, if your piercing remains painful and does not heal, seek treatment from your doctor.
